⭐ Introduction

GitHub Copilot Workspace is a new AI-powered environment that helps us go from an idea or issue → to a complete solution inside our GitHub repository.

Unlike GitHub Copilot (which helps while we type), Copilot Workspace helps us plan, generate, edit, and review code changes directly in GitHub — even before opening VS Code or Codespaces.

If you’re new to Copilot Workspace, this guide explains:

  • What it is
  • How it works
  • How to open it
  • How to use it with GitHub Issues
  • How AI plans and updates code
  • How to create a pull request with Workspaces

🧠 What Is GitHub Copilot Workspace?

GitHub Copilot Workspace is an AI-assisted development environment inside GitHub.com.

It helps you:

  • Understand an issue
  • Generate a step-by-step plan
  • Modify your code across files
  • Preview and edit AI changes
  • Test the changes
  • Create a pull request

Everything happens in our browser.

In simple words:

GitHub Copilot writes code while we type.
Copilot Workspace writes code after thinking about our entire task.

⚙️ How Copilot Workspace Works (Simple Explanation)

When we open a Workspace for an Issue:

  1. Workspace reads our repository
  2. It breaks the task into steps
  3. It shows the exact files it will modify
  4. It generates the code
  5. We review all changes
  6. We apply them or ask for revisions
  7. Workspace can open a PR for us

We stay in control, and the AI works like a teammate helping us complete tasks.

🧩 Requirements Before You Start

You need:

✔ A GitHub account

Choose Free, Pro, or Enterprise.

✔ GitHub Copilot enabled

Go to:
https://github.com/settings/copilot

Enable Copilot or start a trial.

✔ A GitHub repository

Copilot Workspace works with both:

  • Public repos
  • Private repos

✔ A GitHub Issue to work on

Workspace is triggered from Issues.

🚀 Step 1: Open a GitHub Issue in Workspace

Go to any repository → open the Issues tab.

Choose an issue and click:

Open in Copilot Workspace

If we don’t see it, click the Copilot icon (⚡) near the issue title.

GitHub will now launch the Workspace.

📋 Step 2: Let Workspace Analyze Our Issue

When Workspace opens:

  • It reads our Issue
  • Scans the repository
  • Understands existing code
  • Summarizes the problem
  • Creates a Problem Breakdown

We will see a clean summary like:

“To fix this issue, we need to modify X file, update function Y, and add a validation step.”

This is your AI-generated plan.

🧠 Step 3: Review the Proposed Plan

You can now:

  • Accept the plan
  • Edit the plan
  • Ask Workspace to modify the plan
  • Request more context or explanation

Example prompts to improve the plan:

  • “Break this into smaller steps.”
  • “Add test cases.”
  • “Explain why this change is required.”
  • “Only change the API layer, not the database.”

You are guiding the AI like a junior developer.

✏️ Step 4: Generate Code with Workspace

Once you accept the plan, click:

Generate

Workspace will:

  • Create new code
  • Update existing files
  • Add new tests
  • Modify documentation
  • Suggest improvements

You can open each file and review every change.

Nothing is applied until you approve it.

🔎 Step 5: Review and Edit AI Changes

For every file, you will see:

  • Old code → on the left
  • New AI-generated code → on the right

You can:

  • Accept
  • Reject
  • Edit manually
  • Ask Workspace to revise changes

Example prompts:

  • “Use async instead of callbacks.”
  • “Improve variable names.”
  • “Add error handling.”
  • “Rewrite this function more efficiently.”

Workspace responds instantly and updates our code.

💻 Step 6: Open in VS Code or Codespaces (Optional)

If you want to test code in a real editor:

Click:

Open in Code

or

Open in Codespaces

This lets you run the app, debug, or make additional changes using Copilot inside VS Code.

🔁 Step 7: Create a Pull Request

Once you’re happy with all changes, click:

Create Pull Request

Workspace automatically generates:

  • The PR description
  • What changed
  • Why it was changed
  • References the original issue
  • Links the plan and reasoning

You can edit anything before submitting.

🛠️ Troubleshooting Tips

❗ Don’t see “Open in Copilot Workspace”?

  • Make sure Copilot is enabled
  • Workspace may still be rolling out (region-based)
  • Try a public repo

❗ Workspace can’t understand your repo?

Give more context inside the issue:

  • Link to files
  • Explain expected behavior
  • Provide example inputs/outputs

❗ AI changes look incorrect?

Ask:

“Explain your reasoning.”

Or:

“Redo this step with simpler code.”

🎯 When Should You Use Copilot Workspace?

Use Workspace if:

  • You want AI to solve an entire issue
  • You need cross-file changes
  • You want a structured plan
  • You want to generate a PR quickly
  • You’re contributing to open-source projects
  • You work in GitHub frequently
  • You want AI-assisted task completion

Avoid Workspace if:

  • You want quick inline suggestions (use Copilot instead)
  • You work offline
  • You need full local debugging only

🎉 Conclusion

GitHub Copilot Workspace is a powerful new way to build software. It transforms GitHub Issues into working code solutions using AI — with a clear plan, editable steps, and fully reviewable changes.

With Workspace, you can:

  • Understand tasks faster
  • Plan improvements quickly
  • Generate real code safely
  • Fix issues in minutes
  • Create PRs automatically

If GitHub Copilot helps you write code,
GitHub Copilot Workspace helps you deliver solutions.

You’re now ready to start using Workspaces to complete tasks smarter and faster.

🎁 Bonus: GitHub Copilot vs. Copilot Workspace — Simple Comparison

GitHub Copilot and GitHub Copilot Workspace are related, but they solve different problems.

Here’s the easiest explanation:

Copilot is best for:

  • Autocomplete
  • Writing functions
  • Generating code from comments
  • Learning APIs
  • Writing tests
  • Refactoring small areas
  • Explaining code

Think of it as an AI coding assistant sitting next to you while you type.

🚀 GitHub Copilot Workspace = AI that helps you complete tasks

Workspace lives inside GitHub.com and helps you plan and solve issues.

Workspace is best for:

  • Understanding issues
  • Planning work
  • Making multi-file changes
  • Large refactors
  • Repository-wide tasks
  • Creating PRs
  • Guiding beginners through tasks

Think of Workspace as an AI “junior developer” who reads the repo, proposes a plan, and drafts a solution.
